2018 International Summer School on rockslides and related phenomena in the Kokomeren River valley (Kyrgyzstan)
The Ak-Kiol rockslide dam. This natural dam was used for hydropower generation until recently.
The International Summer School on Rockslides and Related Phenomena in the Kokomeren River Valley (Kyrgyzstan) brings together master and doctoral students, professionals, postdocs, and university professors from all around the world. It has been running since 2006 and is hosted by Dr. Alexander Strom (Chief expert of the Geodynamics Research Centre, JSC Hydroproject Institute, Moscow, Russia) and Prof. Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov (Director of the Institute of Seismology, National Academy of Science, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan).
This year, Dr. Anja Dufresne (LIH) attended the School together with three MSc students from the Université de Liège and RWTH-Aachen University who are writing their theses on landslide- and earthquake-related topics.
Over 1,000 large (> one million cubic meters) rockslides and rock avalanches are documented in Central Asia to date (Strom, pers. Comm.). These deposits are well-preserved thanks to the region’s arid conditions. We camped at the bank of the Kokomeren River, and each day drove and hiked to a different site to study the interplay between tectonics, climate, and slope instability that continue to shape Kyrgyzstan’s landscape today.
