Project term: May 31, 2018 to April 30, 2021

"Zonal Isolation, Drilling and Exploitation for EGS Projects (ZoDrEx)" is a European joint project funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) and embedded in the EU programs GEOTHERMICA and Horizon 2020 with numerous renowned partners from science and industry. Within the framework of ZoDrEx, innovative technologies are to be developed and tested which improve the technical and economic success prospects of deep geothermal drilling in solid rock (Enhanced Geothermal Systems) and thus make an important contribution to a sustainable energy supply.

While the early project phase primarily involves laboratory tests, access to the Bedretto Gallery, a former supply tunnel of the Furka Base Tunnel in the Swiss Alps, will enable these technologies to be tested under reservoir-like conditions in the course of the project and thus gain valuable insights into their practical applicability.

The Department of Engineering and Hydrogeology (LIH) will be responsible for the (hydro-)geological exploration of the reservoir at ZoDrEx and the evaluation of the measures carried out during the various development phases and after completion of stimulation. Hydraulic stimulation to increase the rock permeability and thus improve the heat exchange between reservoir and well is also carried out under the guidance of the LIH and is to take place in rock zones isolated from each other along the two boreholes.

The evaluation of the experiments at LIH will allow the evaluation of the effectiveness of the different methods and technologies used and provide a solid data basis for computer-supported simulations of the project partners.
