Research Interests

Many underground constructions and large-scale drilling campaigns in pristine environments suffer from sufficient knowledge of thermo-hydro-mechanical properties of the rock mass and inherited discontinuities. Thus, my research as an interdisciplinary hydrogeologist aims for improved predictions of hydro-mechanical (-thermal) properties and associated uncertainties on a site-scale. This included the compilation of a comprehensive database of worldwide hydraulic properties of crystalline rock which will be expanded to other rock masses and new proxies in the future.

Additionally, I am particularly interested in the influence of tectonic processes on the architecture of geological discontinuities over geological times and the induced distribution of hydro-mechanical properties within these zones of weaknesses. Further research topics include probabilistic 3D geological modeling, improvement of hydro-mechanical field tests and hydrogeological site characterization, especially for geothermal, tunneling, mining and hazardous waste disposal applications. Or in a nutshell, where should we drill or construct and what must we expect.
