STIMulation tests with characterizing periodic pumping tests and highresolution seismic monitoring: Improvement of prognosis and real-time monitoring
TEChnologies for the creation of hydraulic conduits in crystalline rock

The project STIMTEC, generously funded by BMBF, focusses on the advancement and optimization
of stimulation procedures and the investigation of the controlling hydro-mechanical processes.
Groups located at three academic institutions and one company representing expertise in geophysics, structural geology, and rock mechanics jointly work towards the analyses of the initiation and
propagation of hydraulic fractures at constrained boundary conditions in the research mine Reiche
Zeche, Freiberg. The field testing comprising fluid injection for stimulation, periodic pumping tests
for characterization, and an advanced procedure for seismic monitoring is complemented by numerical modelling to develop a technology for controlled stimulation. The model of the stimulated volume
gained from the analysis of recorded data and simulations will be validated by drilling into the stimulated volume, hydraulic interference testing, and laboratory investigations of retrieved cores. We
aim at providing diagnostic criteria for the success of a stimulation effort by establishing the link
between damage pattern, hydraulic modification, and observed seismic activity. The project addresses the need for experiments on the decameter scale that compared to the reservoir scale offers
almost full control over boundary conditions and ample information on the rocks present and that
exceed the scales of laboratory experiments by far. The well-characterized rock volume may serve
as a reservoir laboratory in the future.
