Topic:
Dating massive Alpine rock slope failures using different methodological approaches
In the European Alps, at present more than 600 rockslides and rock avalanches >106m3 in volume are identified. Most of them are pre-historic events and only for about 10% the age is sufficiently constrained to be potentially useful in comparison with past climatic change or earthquake activity. Within the last 15 years, we applied different modern dating techniques to evaluate the timing of these catastrophes in the Eastern Alps as precise as possible. After a short introduction into the spatial distribution of Alpine rock slope failures and the usable dating techniques, we present a row of spectacular case studies, where dating was successful. Additionally we discuss the results of dating approaches we applied on slow moving deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSDs). At the end of the talk, we present the preliminary distribution of massive Alpine rock slope failures in space and time and speculate about their commonalities.
